In 1996 the KMAC Kids

learned that plants can help take toxins out of the air. They wrote
to doctors and scientists and learned that some plants can help take
toxins out of the air through their leaves. They break the chemicals
down and turn them into sugar. Then the plant uses the sugar for food.
They also learned that there are many different kinds of chemicals and
toxins in the products we use; like starch, glue, hair spray, paint,
perfume, cleaners, detergents, fabric softeners and other things. They
learned that indoor air pollution can affect your lungs, heart, brain
and other organs.
Did you know that carbon monoxide from faulty furnaces, fireplaces,
or car exhaust can make you sad and sick and confused? Pesticides
and chemicals can make you feel angry and sick. Some cleaners can
give you a sore throat and make it hard to breathe.
Plants can help take some toxins out of the air,
but not all of them.
Being Indoor Air Quality Detectives made these
KMAC kids think about ways to help make the air we breathe healthier.
